SENSE is committed to improving equality, diversity and inclusion in the Geosciences. We will be recruiting 70 PhD students over four cohorts and have a responsibility to ensure that these students come from diverse backgrounds, are treated equally once they arrive and are accepted in the scientific community. We aim to build a happy, supportive, diverse cohort of students and as such are committed to improving recruitment procedures, challenging the standard idea of academic ‘excellence’ and devoting time to thinking about the welfare of our students. We believe all our students have a unique contribution to science and to the academic community, and we want to equip them with the tools they need to produce excellent science, engage positively within academia and to the wider population and to go on to have successful careers in their chosen area.
