Join SENSE Python Training October 2023

The SENSE CDT will be running a Python training course from 23rd – 27th October 2023, which will be run in person at the University of Edinburgh. We have a small number of places available on this course, and we are delighted to invite UK based PhD students to apply to attend. Successful applicants will join the NERC SENSE CDT PhD students on the training, providing an excellent opportunity for PhD students across the UK to network. The SENSE CDT is on satellite data in environmental science, from which most of the examples will be taken.

The Learning Objectives of the Python training course include:

  • Work effectively with a Jupyter notebook
    • Use git to version control  your own code and that of others
    • Understand Python semantics, scalars and data structures
    • Build control flow statements
    • Define functions, and use modules and packages
    • Use appropriately different key scientific Python libraries, such as numpy, matplotlib, cartopy, pandas, xarray and netcdf

This training will be led by Dr Encarni Medina-Lopez from the University of Edinburgh, School of Engineering and supported by demonstrators. Training will be in the form of lectures, peer supported practical work and group work with PhD students from SENSE and other centres.

Successful applicants will not be charged for taking part in this training. SENSE will reimburse accommodation costs during the training (details to be given once an offer of a place is made) however attendees will be expected to make their own travel and accommodation arrangements. SENSE does not cover the costs of travel to the training location or subsistence costs throughout the week. However, tea, coffee and refreshments will be provided during morning and afternoon breaks.

Students will be required to bring their own laptops and will be given guest access to the university network. Information will be given prior to the training on any software downloads required.

The training will take place on a full time basis (9am -5pm Monday to Friday) at the University of Edinburgh, Kings Buildings campus https://www.ed.ac.uk/maps/maps and students must attend all sessions.

Pre-requisites:

We expect students applying to have a scientific background and a strong mathematics baseline. Priority will be given to students in the earlier years of their programme who have the capacity to enhance their skills for their PhD research by completing this training.

Additional spaces for this training is funded by NERC enrichment funding therefore we seek to use this as an opportunity to widen our network of participating universities.
